3rd & Final Step of How to Become a Sports Broadcaster

Advance with Experience

Aspiring broadcasting professionals sometimes begin their careers in non-broadcasting positions such as reporters, camera operators or production assistance. Once they have demonstrated a capacity for sports announcing, they may work their way up to on-air sports broadcasting positions and eventually move on to higher paying positions that are available. Some broadcasters such as Michael Kay go on to host their own show about sports and the sporting world.

There are lots of sports broadcaster that have received a Bachelor's Degree in Sports Broadcasting, Communications, or a closely-related program. Update (May 13, 2015)

Hello!! It's me again!! Today I just watched some more videos on broadcasting today, nothing too important other than some weird commentary. Ron Burgandy made a guest appearance on a radio and announced some famous calls like Kirk Gibson's home run against the A's, Doug Flutie's Hail Mary for Boston College and Al Michaels announcing the final 10 seconds of the Miracle on Ice between USA and Soviet Union. Some LEGENDARY calls. Thanks for following my blog :)

Some Info (May 12, 2015)

Broadcasting doesn't have to just be for professional sports teams or collegiate teams, it can be also for high schools as well. I watched a video from Muskogee High School in Muskogee, Oklahoma where the broadcasters asked some students to work the cameras and do the replays on the jumbo-tron and even put the score on the board. When they interviewed the students, the students replied with mostly the same answers where they never even thought about being in the broadcasting business and after they tried out for the first time, they enjoy it and continue to do it throughout the school year/season. I really hope to actually participate in something like that in the future, whether it is for the University of Lethbridge or the Calgary Flames, it would be awesome to be in the  broadcasting business.

Do I Want To Be A Sports Broadcaster?

Sports broadcasters often work as analysts or p-b-p announcers for sports TV networks or specific teams such as Buck Martinez for the Toronto Blue Jays "You Can Forget About This One!!" and Jack Edwards for the Boston Bruins "Milan Lucic SCORES!!!". Their duties include presenting news, interviewing guests or sports players and one of the most exciting parts of the job, calling games. Broadcasters are primarily employed at collegiate or professional levels.

While opportunities for work are available in television and radio, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that entry level opportunities are more likely to be available through small stations. Work, at times, can be stressful, with tight schedules and deadlines being the normal for professionals. Most professional broadcasters typically work indoors in a climate-controlled studio or booth!!
